Principles, Precepts, and Propriety

Chinese medicine was developed and studied within a distinct cultural context where the universe was not seen as discrete parts functioning independely of one another. The human body and mind is understood similar to the way western science understands ecology as a complex system of interacting and iterrelated parts. It's foundational principles arose from concepts deeply rooted in the observation of the natural world. Where the human experience of life, growth, vitality, maturity and death are correlated to the rhythms of nature. Life is that wich is generated via an interaction between Heaven and Earth (Yang and Yin respectively).

The cycles of natural change observed through light and darkness that we see in the sun and moon, heat, cold, dampness, dryness through the seasons embodied a marcocosm of health and wellness in the human body. Yin and Yang evolve into the Wu Xing (or five phases) which then unfold into the Six Meridians, and 12 organs. Chinese medicine ultimately works through a similar process of change, the course of treatment generally takes time to correct imbalances that have accumulated. The human experience is and ebb and flow of change, simply an interactive relationship between behavior and biology.

Blue Spruce Acupunture and Chinese medicine is ultimately inspired by the state tree of my home, Colorado, two of which were planted by my grandparents in our family home. In many cultures across the globe Spruce are belived to be a wise man of the forest representing resilience, longveity, adaptability, and stregth. In one Hopi legend it is belived to the the body of a medicine man transformed, and in many cultures of the Rocky Mountain region the spring tips have been used to treat colds, rheumatism, gastric issues, and scury. Vikings used them to keep sailors healthy on long voyages. The Yakut believe that shamans are born inside the "Great Spruce of the North." In China they are associated with generosity, protection, healing, and eternal life.

Health, healing, and wellness are a by product of our biological and cultural ability to adapt to the constantcy of variability in experience and enviroment throughout life. Chinese medicine undertsands this fundamental precept of existence. It expresses this through its connection to the present expression of the patient. Meeting the patient here and now is the propriety of practice. Applying the priciples of nature simplifies the understanding of disease, illness, healing, and wellness for both patient and practioner.
